Research Assistant (Field & GIS)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at NTU is a national science Research Centre of Excellence. Its mission is to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, toward safer and more sustainable societies. We seek a qualified candidate to assist in geological field work overseas and in GIS-based processing of data with the following job responsibilities:

  • Assist with surveying (by total station and/or other means), UAV drone flying, sample collection, sample processing, digging, carrying of equipment, snorkeling (scuba diving is NOT expected), working in paleoseismic trenches and / or any other similar tasks
  • Work with overseas collaborators to arrange logistics for field work, to procure necessary field equipment, and to handle administrative requirements associated with field work.
  • Learn necessary GIS techniques and conduct GIS-based analysis of data collected in the field
  • Possibility to participate in the preparation of presentations for conferences or manuscripts for publication


Bachelor's degree in Environmental Earth Systems Science, geological sciences, or a similar field.
Extensive geological field experience.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
Experience with MATLAB
Experience with some GIS applications, e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Agisoft PhotoScan
Willingness to work as part of a team in remote areas of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia, for up to 30 days at a time.
Willingness to work overseas for a total of 90-150 days per year.
Willingness to be a team player.
Willingness to hike off-road to targeted field sites
Willingness to support research activities through the day.
Comfortable working in environments ranging from coastal intertidal zones (reefs), to muddy mangrove or peat environments, to mountain environments at moderate elevations (typically less than 1000 m above sea level)
Ability to swim, which will be essential for safety reasons when working in coastal environments
