Research Assistant (Volcanic Hazard Assessment)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at NTU is a national science Research Centre of Excellence. Its mission is to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, toward safer and more sustainable societies. We seek a qualified research assistant to work with the Volcano Group at EOS, as well as local and regional partners, to assist in the numerical modelling and assessment of volcanic hazards at active volcanoes. Training will be provided to define eruption source parameters, run the numerical models and process outputs. He/She will take part in regional field visits and be expected to present their research at international conferences.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Interrogation of datasets and literature to establish source parameters;
Use and development of Matlab, GIS and Linux-based tools for modelling volcanic hazards;
Working with local partners to run hazard simulations for volcanoes in unrest or eruption;
Analysis, visualisation and effective communication of hazard outputs.

Requirements: 

BSc degree in Earth Sciences or a related field
Solid background in using Matlab and GIS, and ideally Linux/Unix
Knowledge in basic volcanology and natural hazards
Self-driven, able to work independently but also a good team player, good written and oral communication skills
