Biogeochemistry of barium in rivers and oceans of SE Asia

Stable Barium isotopes (δ137Ba) in seawater can provide information on nutrient cycling, productivity, and riverine inputs in the ocean. Ba - δ137Ba measurements from global riverine ocean systems may improve the use of Ba as a tracer and better constrain the cycling of Ba, but data is only available in limited regions of the oceans. In this project, we propose to set up a high-precision analytical method for [Ba] and δ137Ba determination in water and sediment samples, followed by Ba - δ137Ba analysis from the monsoonal Southeast Asia, a critical region which remains relatively unexplored in terms of paleoproductivity studies.
