Physics of the Earthquake Cycle: from Tremors to Giant Earthquakes

This project supports the work of the Earthquake Physics group and its external collaborators on fault mechanics, from tremors to giant earthquakes.  We explored the nonlinear dynamics of repeating earthquakes during hundreds of cycles, the dynamics of the Indian Ocean slab as it dives below the Sunda Trench, and the expected potency of subduction zone earthquakes. Our studies will provide new fundamental knowledge about earthquake source that can also find practical applications in hazard mitigation, in line with the mission of the Observatory.
