Research Fellow (Volcanology)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a research centre at NTU with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies.

EOS invites applications for a Research Fellow position in tephra hazard research relating to near real-time eruption detection, characterisation, and dispersal modelling. The main focus on this project revolves around regional infrasound detection and identification of volcanic activity. The successful candidate will work in a vibrant scientific department, participating in strong collaborations and frequent interaction with members of the volcano group and stakeholders in Singapore and the region.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Associate Professors Benoit Taisne and Susanna Jenkins with a team of international scientists on the integration of different eruption detection, characterisation, and modelling components. The candidate will work in a team to develop a framework that integrates multiple strands of data to ultimately automate volcanic event detection, characterisation and modelling of the resulting tephra hazard.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design framework to integrate multiple data sources (e.g. infrasound, satellite) that can refine eruption source parameters in near real-time

  • Familiarity with tephra dispersal models (ideally 3D) and eruption source parameters

  • Coordinate between multiple research partners involved in the project and explore the potential for additional strands of research

  • Maintenance of documentation, including inhouse data repository, and GitHub repository

  • Perform other relevant research tasks assigned by the Principal Investigator

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in volcanology, atmospheric transport modelling, or related topics

  • Established in the field with a good record of publications

  • Able to mentor and coach undergraduate and PhD students

  • Strong computational background (e.g., Python, Matlab…), with experience in a Linux/Unix working environment preferred

  • Self-driven, able to work independently but also a good team player

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn

  • Excellent English written and communication skills

  • Independence in research direction and team spirit

  • Team player and willingness to collaborate

EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
