The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) continued to have a strong presence at the annual American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference in December 2018. AGU welcomed 28,000 visitors and our booth had engaged 750 visitors from different countries and various continents. Many were keen to network with and discuss possible future collaborations with our scientists.

Our researchers gave 11 oral presentations, 34 poster presentations, as well as a town hall, with topics ranging from the fate of water on Mars to communicating coral skeletal data using microscopic images.

EOS PhD student Mr Stephen Chua won the Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA) for his poster presentation on historic sea-level and coastal changes at Singapore’s Kallang River Basin. This is a much coveted award that is given only to the top five percent of the year’s student participants. Mr Chua’s topic was on a research project, conducted together with Associate Professor Adam Switzer in the Coastal Lab, that looks at sediment records to infer the changes in sea levels and the coastal evolution of the Kallang River Basin as far back as 9,500 years ago.

EOS also celebrated 10 successful years of leadership under Professor Kerry Sieh, the Executive Director of EOS. At the EOS Annual Reception, Assistant Professor Aron Meltzner gave an opening speech that paid tribute to Prof Sieh and his contributions to EOS. Prof Sieh was then called on to share his journey of leading EOS over these past 10 years.
