From Paris to Belém: Turning the Global Stocktake into a New Era of Implementation

Co-hosted by the Earth Observatory Singapore at the Nanyang Technological University, the Embassy of Brazil in Singapore, and the Embassy of France in Singapore.

Ten years ago, 195 countries came together during the COP21 and pledged to accelerate the fight against climate change. The global and national efforts that followed the Paris Agreement reduced global warming projections to a range of +2-3°C by 2100, whereas the forecasts published before 2015 suggested a 4-5°C trajectory by 2100. This change in trajectory proves that the Paris Agreement and the Conference of the Parties (COPs) produce concrete results, and that climate multilateralism must remain ambitious in its goals.

As the human, economic, and social consequences of climate change are worsening worldwide, we must collectively get back on the trajectory that will enable us to achieve the Paris Agreement objective of limiting average temperature increase to +1.5°C. The next United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, provides the best platform for stakeholders to unite once more and to step up efforts.

This panel will explore how governments, private actors, and civil society can cooperate to turn updated NDCs into concrete results. With Brazil positioning COP30 as a platform to “ensure that what has been agreed becomes reality,” this panel will outline how to translate commitments into large-scale, concrete action. Discussions will take stock of the past ten years’ actions to identify lessons learned, and explore remaining challenges and expectations for the COP30.
