Will Mangrove Forests Save Us From Climate Change?
Event Type: Seminar
Date: 2 February 2021, 13:00 to 15:00
About the Event
Mangrove forests are now being considered as a key nature-based solution to climate change mitigation. However, while mangroves can potentially offset greenhouse gas emissions through the accumulation of "blue carbon", they themselves are vulnerable to
climate change impacts such as sea-level rise. This presentation will discuss ongoing research tackling these aspects in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Mangroves in the region are able to sequester and store high rates and volumes of carbon, with absolute
rates determined by geomorphic setting and disturbance. Scale issues mean that mangrove blue carbon is most impactful at local and (some) national scales, where carbon credit projects can make a meaningful contribution to local livelihoods.
