Will Mangrove Forests Save Us From Climate Change?

About the Event

Mangrove forests are now being considered as a key nature-based solution to climate change mitigation. However, while mangroves can potentially offset greenhouse gas emissions through the accumulation of "blue carbon", they themselves are vulnerable to climate change impacts such as sea-level rise. This presentation will discuss ongoing research tackling these aspects in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Mangroves in the region are able to sequester and store high rates and volumes of carbon, with absolute rates determined by geomorphic setting and disturbance. Scale issues mean that mangrove blue carbon is most impactful at local and (some) national scales, where carbon credit projects can make a meaningful contribution to local livelihoods.

About the Speaker

Dan Friess

Dan is an Associate Professor and Dean’s Chair in the Department of Geography, National University of Singapore, and Deputy Director of the NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions. Dan’s research group (www.themangrovelab.com) focuses on ecosystem services (particularly blue carbon), threats to mangroves such as deforestation and sea-level rise, and mangrove restoration.
