Announcement of new EOS Interim Director

28 Mar 2025 | EOS News

Effective 1 April, Professor Emma Hill, Chair of the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and Principal Investigator at the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), will be appointed Interim Director of EOS. A search committee is being formed to identify the next EOS Director, and she will lead EOS until the appointment of the new Director.

Prof Hill is a distinguished Earth scientist whose research has focused on using geodesy to study natural hazards and sea-level rise in Southeast Asia and around the world, and on understanding the connections between various hazards so that appropriate solutions can be derived to bolster the resilience of communities. Her work has significantly advanced the understanding of tectonic activity in the Sumatran subduction zone and other regions. She leads the MOE TIER3 programme ‘Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology’ that aims to provide the essential predictive and quantitative understanding of geohazards in the region to reduce risk and impacts and to save lives and infrastructure. She previously served as Director of Research and Strategy at EOS, and is an NTU President’s Chair in Earth Sciences. She will continue in her role as Chair of ASE in parallel to her interim role at EOS.

The EOS team extends its deepest gratitude to Professor Benjamin Horton for his exemplary leadership as EOS Director since 2020. Under his guidance, EOS successfully transitioned from a Research Centre of Excellence to a University Research Institute in 2023. He also achieved significant research milestones, including securing the S$50 million Climate Transformation Programme, which bolsters Singapore's climate resilience initiatives. Prof Horton has accepted a position at City University of Hong Kong, where he will establish a climate centre and serve as Dean of the School of Energy and the Environment. His dedication to climate science and sea-level research has left an indelible mark on our institution.
