Model of a tsunami wave triggered by an earthquake on the Sunda megathrust

This animation shows the propagation of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean after an earthquake (Mw=8.2) on the Mentawai gap of the Sunda megathrust offshore Sumatra, Indonesia. The Mentawai gap is a segment of the Sunda megathrust that is expected to rupture, although we cannot predict when. The Mentawai islands are in the upper right corner of the video, Mauritius and Reunion islands in the lower left corner.

This animation has been created by the Tsunami Modelling group at EOS.
