The study of lead (Pb) regional geochemical cycle in the South China Sea helps to minimize the risk of exposure to contaminated food or water in future.
This also provides an insight into the pathways of biogeochemical circulation. Inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) is used in this project to analyze Pb concentration and isotopic composition on the coral cores and sediment cores. This assay the origin of Pb, amount of Pb deposited at different points in time and it changes over time. Water sample near the coring sites are collected to better constrain the environment these cores represent.
