Volcanic arcs in Southeast Asia are among the most active on earth. EOS Volcano Group conducts geologic, geochemical and geophysical studies to improve understanding of volcanic activity, particularly processes related to eruptions. EOS research in this field is designed to produce knowledge and tools that will aid forecasting of volcanic eruptions, assessment of their environmental and societal impacts, and efforts to mitigate the hazards.
Research Areas
Magma Transport Dynamics -
Benoit Taisne
The Magma Transport Dynamics group uses numerical and analogue models, as well as seismic and other geophysical data to understand magma movement within the Earth’s crust and how this movement controls volcanic eruptions.
Physical Volcanology and Petrology -
Caroline Bouvet de Maisonneuve
The Physical Volcanology and Petrology group aims to understand the mechanisms that control eruption styles and magnitudes of SE Asian volcanoes. The group uses a combination of field studies, petrology and textural analysis to address pre- and syn-eruption dynamics.
Volcanic Petrology Group -
Fidel Costa
The Volcanic Petrology group conducts fundamental research on magmatic processes and rocks from active volcanoes. They use petrological techniques and integrate them with monitoring signals and numerical/analogue models to better understand and forecast volcanic eruptions.
Volcanic Hazards and Risk -
Susanna Jenkins
The Volcanic Hazards and Risk group focuses on quantifying the volcanic hazard, physical vulnerability and risk around active volcanoes. They do this by using numerical models, carrying out pre-, syn- and post-eruption field studies and through the statistical interrogation of large datasets.
Lab Volcanoes
Gede & Salak, Marapi, Mayon
EOS has developed three main volcano laboratories in collaboration with international partners. The continuous collection and monitoring of these volcanoes also allows long term research into volcanic activity to be conducted.
WOVOdat
WOVOdat is a unique, open access, comprehensive global database on volcanic unrest aimed at improving eruption forecasts through the standardization and collation of monitoring and other data.
